Description
The ceiling fan in the low-rent Cairo safehouse chopped the humid air into hot, rhythmic pulses. Bond didn’t blink. His eyes remained fixed on the false bottom of the heavy mahogany desk he had just pried apart with the edge of a carbon-fiber combat knife.
Beneath a layer of forged passports and cold, unspent euros lay the prize: a polished steel timepiece, its black dial absorbing what little light filtered through the shuttered windows.
It wasn’t a standard operative’s watch. It didn’t conceal a micro-laser, nor was it loaded with high-tensile garrote wire. This was a Côte d’Azur—mass-produced, ordinary, and completely untraceable. And that was precisely why the late courier had chosen it.
Bond picked it up, feeling the cool weight of the metal link bracelet in his palm. He turned it over. Scratched crudely into the stainless steel backing plate were six digits—the coordinates to a hidden submarine pen along the Adriatic coast.
A floorboard creaked out in the hallway.
Bond slid the watch into his dinner jacket pocket, his right hand slipping effortlessly onto the textured grip of his Walther PPK. The courier was dead, but the clock was already ticking.
